Prontomize is proud to make Rafael Rodriguez' art available to the world. As a child, in his spare time, Mr. Rodriguez began working in his father's workshop to learn the craft the way it has been taught for many generations. His son, Santiago, is following his footsteps to continue this thousand-year old tradition.
Rafael graduated from high school in Ráquira, Boyacá, and went on to study at the School of Art of Bogota University. In 2003, he returned to Ráquira, where he and his wife, Elizabeth Lorenza, work together in their family business. The pictures are testimony of their great artistic work and rich cultural heritage.
Raquira is a
Chibcha language word formerly spoken by the
Muisca people that means "the place where the people that work with clay live". According to Muisca mythology,
Bochica chose the places in Tinjacá y
Raquira to teach pottery. The Spanish conquistadores added their oven and finishing techniques to the natives' pottery technology.
Thus, owning ceramics or any other artifact from Raq provides a spiritual experience not available through mass-produced ceramics from anywhere else in the world. When you get a Botellon, Chorote, Vasija, etc. you experience the presence of Bochica.
